Project Title | Wrocław University of Science and Technology

Nokia × PWr | 5G+/6G

Project Description

The project, carried out by Nokia Solutions and Networks sp. z o.o. (NSN) in cooperation with Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST), involves industrial research and development work aimed at creating an innovative process for the automated verification and optimization of new telecommunications functionalities, helping to streamline the deployment of 5G+/6G networks.

The process will bring together digital twin technology, digitized domain knowledge, and numerical data from network performance measurements. This will support decision-making and help enable the deployment of next-generation mobile networks.

The project involves developing mechanisms to automate the deployment of new functionalities, including representative sampling methods, multidimensional assessment of the impact of changes on network performance, and a recommendation system for context-aware optimization of base-station configuration parameters. It will also include the development of an adaptive digital twin model capable of accurately estimating groups of key performance indicators (KPIs).

The outcome of the project will be a business-process innovation implemented in the operations of the Consortium Leader. The project addresses the challenges posed by the growing complexity of network functionalities, particularly in the context of 6G technology, where AI-based methods are expected to play an increasingly important role.

The innovative process will support a shift away from the traditional, centralized approach to managing data, knowledge, and experience, where humans play the central role (human-centered), towards a technology-driven model in which humans take on a supervisory role at selected stages of the process (human-in-the-loop).

This shift is particularly important as modern telecommunications networks become more complex and need to adapt dynamically to changing operating conditions. There are currently no automated, systematic solutions specifically designed to support the deployment of such functionalities, either in Poland or worldwide. The project addresses this gap by creating a structured, digital, and scalable deployment process with algorithmic human oversight.

The Nokia Solutions and Networks team has been working for several years with researchers from the Faculty of Mathematics at Wrocław University of Science and Technology on the modeling and analysis of telecommunications data. This collaboration has led to joint master's theses in Applied Mathematics, co-authored scientific publications, and commercial projects. The present project is the next step in this collaboration.
